Descrizione

The main type of ancient megalithic edifice found in Sardinia, developed during the Nuragic Age between 1900 and 730 BC. Today it is the symbol of Sardinia and its distinctive culture, the Nuragic civilization. There is no consensus on the function of the nuraghes: they could have been religious temples, ordinary dwellings, rulers' residences, military strongholds, meeting halls, or a combination of the former. Some of the nuraghes are, however, located in strategic places, such as hills, from which important passages could be easily controlled. Nuraghes are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Contesto storico

A nuraghe (plural: nuraghi) is a unique type of ancient megalithic stone fortress found exclusively on the island of Sardinia, Italy. Built during the Nuragic Age (roughly 1900–730 BC), these structures are the defining symbols of the island’s prehistoric civilization.

Remarkably, between 7,000 and 8,000 nuraghi still dot the Sardinian landscape today. They were constructed entirely out of massive, local dry stones (such as basalt or granite) stacked expertly on top of one another without any mortar or cement. They range from simple, single conical watchtowers to massive, multi-towered royal fortresses surrounded by ancient hut villages. While their exact functions are still debated among archaeologists, they are widely believed to have served as military strongholds, noble residences, sacred meeting centers, or strategic territorial checkpoints.
