Historical Background

During World War II, the Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy) equipped its capital ships, such as the Littorio-class battleships (Littorio, Vittorio Veneto, and Roma), with a variety of standardized ancillary service boats and lifeboats.
Among these onboard utility crafts, the 8.6-meter-long motorboat (often referred to as an imbarcazione a motore or motoscafo di servizio) played a vital role.

Key Characteristics & Role
• Purpose: These 8.6-meter boats were multi-purpose utility crafts. They served primarily as personnel transports for transferring officers and crew members to other ships or shore facilities when anchored, as workboats for ship maintenance, and as heavy-duty lifeboats during emergencies.
• Design: Built using robust wooden hull construction, they featured a clean, traditional naval profile optimized for stability in open water. They were powered by reliable internal combustion engines to handle the heavy payloads of transferring heavily equipped sailors or supplies.
• Onboard Stowage: On battleships like the Vittorio Veneto class, these boats were typically nested in designated boat decks amidships or towards the stern. They were launched and retrieved using the battleship's heavy-duty mechanical deck cranes or specialized davits.
