Historical Background

The Dressel 6A is a specific type of Roman transport amphora utilized primarily during the late 1st century BC to the mid-1st century AD. It is highly regarded by archaeologists as a primary container for shipping regional wines

Key Characteristics
• Primary Content: Specifically designed to carry wine. Findings from the British Museum even show traces of pine pitch linings, which were commonly used to waterproof the interior of wine jars.
• Physical Shape: It features a long cylindrical neck, a slightly carinated (angled) shoulder, and a heavy banded or collared rim. The ovoid, tapered body has a solid spike toe at the base, and it is flanked by two tall, vertical oval-section handles.
• Origin & Production: These containers were heavily manufactured along the Adriatic coast of Italy (especially in regions like Picenum) and in northern Italy (Cisalpina). Production centers were frequently owned by prominent Roman families, who stamped their names or trademarks onto the rims or necks.
• Distribution: While produced along the Italian Adriatic, they were traded extensively across Italy, into the Balkans, the Aegean region, and even as far as North Africa.
