Description

The F4F Wildcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft that began service in 1940 with both the United States Navy and the British Royal Navy where it was initially known as the Martlet. Historical Background

The designation "9-GF-7" on a F4F-4 Wildcat refers to a highly specific historical aircraft livery assigned to the escort carrier USS Santee (CVE-29) during Operation Torch in November 1942.

The coding system breaks down as follows:
• 9-GF: Represents Escort Scouting Squadron 29 (VGS-29) or Escort Fighting Squadron 29 (VGF-29) assigned to the carrier.
• 7: Represents the specific aircraft number within that squadron.

Historical Context & Operation Torch
During Operation Torch (the Allied invasion of French North Africa), aircraft like 9-GF-7 operated from the deck of the USS Santee (CVE-29). To prevent friendly fire incidents between the multiple Allied nations involved, these aircraft wore specialized markings:
• Yellow Fuselage Ring: A prominent bright yellow ring was painted around the standard American white-star insignia on the fuselage and wings to heighten visibility for Allied troops.
• Blue-Gray Over Light Gray: The aircraft retained the standard early-war U.S. Navy non-reflective blue-gray upper camouflage with light-gray undersides.

About the F4F-4 Wildcat
The F4F-4 variant was the definitive early-war version of the Wildcat:
• Sto-Wing System: It introduced a unique, manual patented skewed-axis folding wing system. This mechanism halved the space needed to store the plane, effectively allowing carriers to double their fighter complements.
• Armament Upgrades: The armament was increased from four to six wing-mounted .50 caliber Browning machine guns. However, because of the extra weight, the ammunition capacity per gun was reduced, giving pilots only about 20 seconds of continuous firing time.
• Armor and Safety: It was heavily armored and featured self-sealing fuel tanks, making it extremely rugged and capable of absorbing severe battle damage compared to its main rival, the Japanese A6M Zero.

The model was created based on blueprints, photos and historical documentation. It was created with precision in detail and in real units of measurement to be a faithful digital reproduction of the original.
Detailed Cockpit INCLUDED.
LIGHTWAVE and BLENDER - The scene contains the model with uv materials assigned and in the rigged version a basic setup to control each movable part, such as ailerons, rudder, elevators, propeller, cockpit hood and landing gears.
OBJ and FBX - If you need to animate the airplane you have to make your own setup according to the 3d software you are using. You may need to reassign uv textures when open the files with different software. The aircraft is subdivided into parts each one with its uv map. To reassign textures you only have to load texture maps and assign each of them to the respective channel.
