Description

The Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp is an American air-cooled, 14-cylinder radial aircraft engine that stands as one of the most produced aviation piston engines in history. Developed in the early 1930s by Pratt & Whitney, a total of 173,618 units were manufactured between 1932 and 1951. Its record production numbers were heavily driven by massive Allied military demand during World War II.

Historical Background

The core innovation of the R-1830 was its "twin-row" configuration, which arranged 14 cylinders into two staggered rows of seven. This setup provided a much larger volumetric displacement without increasing the frontal area of the engine, maintaining low aerodynamic drag while ensuring smoother engine operation.
• Type: 14-cylinder, two-row, air-cooled radial engine
• Displacement: 1,830 cubic inches (30.0 liters)
• Bore & Stroke: 5.5 in × 5.5 in (140 mm × 140 mm)
• Power Output: Ranged from 800 hp in early configurations to over 1,350 hp in late-model variants (commonly averaging 1,200 hp at 2,700 RPM)
• Supercharger: Internal centrifugal single-stage supercharger
• Dry Weight: Approximately 1,250 to 1,467 lbs (528 to 667 kg) depending on the specific variant

Historic Applications
The Twin Wasp powered some of the most famous and strategically vital military and commercial aircraft of the 20th century:
• Douglas DC-3 / C-47 Skytrain: The backbone of WWII air transport and early commercial aviation.
• Consolidated B-24 Liberator: A heavy bomber manufactured in higher numbers than any other American military aircraft.
• Consolidated PBY Catalina: A widely utilized maritime patrol flying boat.
• Grumman F4F Wildcat: The primary United States Navy carrier-borne fighter at the start of WWII.

Additional Information

The model was created based on photos and historical documentation. It was created with precision in detail and in real units of measurement to be a faithful digital reproduction of the original. The object has been modeled in Lightwave and finished and texturized in 3DCoat.
LIGHTWAVE and BLENDER - The engine is assembled with instanced copies of the cylinder to make the entire model lighter.
OBJ and FBX - I provide the entire model assembled as one mesh, but also divided into single parts (base, front cylinder, rear cylinder, propeller) so you can assemble the engine using linked (or instanced) copies to save memory (each cylinder have to be duplicated and rotated around the engine center of 51.43º - 7 cylinders on each line, 14 cylinders in total)
The entire model has 480K polygons, but the single cylinder has 28K polygons only
