Description

The German 3.7 cm SK C/30 was the primary light anti-aircraft cannon used by the Nazi Germany Kriegsmarine during World War II. Designed by Rheinmetall in the early 1930s, it served across almost all major German surface warships, layout complexes, and submarines.

Historical Background

The SK C/30 was an exceptionally accurate weapon with excellent ballistics, but it suffered from a fatal operational flaw: it was semi-automatic and manually loaded, requiring each round to be slotted in by hand.

Technical Specifications
Type: Anti-aircraft / multi-purpose cannon
Designer / Manufacturer: Rheinmetall
Barrel Length: 2.96 meters (L/83 caliber)
Muzzle Velocity: 1,000 m/s (3,281 fps) — 25% faster than the Bofors 40mm
Effective / Max Range: ~8,500 meters ceiling
Rate of Fire: ~30 rounds per minute (practical limit due to manual loading)
Ammunition: Fixed HE-Tracer (Br Sprgr Patr 40) and AP-Tracer

Mounting Variants
The weapon was deployed in three distinct configurations depending on the vessel class:
1. Dopp L C/30 (Twin Mount): Featured a highly sophisticated, gyro-stabilized system designed to counteract a ship's pitch and roll. While brilliant on paper, the open mechanism was prone to salt-water damage and freezing in harsh climates.
2. Einh L C/34 (Single Mount): A simple pedestal mount used on smaller craft like torpedo boats and auxiliary ships.
3. Ubts L C/39 (Submarine Mount): Designated as the SK C/30U, this was a specialized "wet mount" that could be submerged entirely with the U-boat.

Performance and Combat Legacy
The high muzzle velocity made the SK C/30 incredibly flat-shooting and easy to aim, yielding great precision for single shots against incoming targets.
However, as Allied aircraft grew faster and tactics shifted toward heavy saturation bombing, its low rate of fire became a severe liability. While contemporary fully automatic weapons like the Bofors 40 mm gun could pump out 120+ rounds per minute, the SK C/30 could manage just a fraction of that. Due to bureaucratic friction and Kriegsmarine perfectionism, a fully automatic successor (the 3.7 cm FlaK 43 or KM42) did not widely replace it until late in the war.

Additional Information

The model was created based on blueprints, photos and historical documentation. It was created with precision in detail and in real units of measurement to be a faithful digital reproduction of the original. The object has been modeled in Lightwave and finished and texturized in 3DCoat.
LIGHTWAVE 2018 - The model comes with a simple Lightwave 2018 setup scene to animate pitch and heading rotation.
OBJ and FBX - model with UV maps. You may need to reassign textures when open the files with different software.
BLENDER 2.79 - UV model with uv material assigned.
The object has two UV maps, each one with color, normal, roughness, metalness and specular textures
