Historical Background

The Beltrán IIB (also known as Beltrán II B) is a highly recognizable type of Roman transport amphora produced mainly along the coast of Baetica (southern Spain), with its production epicenter centered around the Bay of Cádiz. Named after archaeologist Miguel Beltrán who classified it in 1970, these vessels were heavily utilized during the High Roman Empire—predominantly spanning the 1st to 2nd centuries AD, and extending into the early 3rd century AD.

Core Purpose & Content
These vessels were designed specifically as maritime containers for the international trade of fish-based products, most notably garum (the famous Roman fermented fish sauce), salted fish, and fish pastes. They were shipped across the empire, with archaeological footprints found as far north as Britain and Germany.

Morphological Characteristics
The distinctive silhouette of the Beltrán IIB is defined by several unique structural features:
• Body Shape: An elongated, pear-shaped (piriform) body that peaks in width closer to its base.
• Rim & Neck: A highly flared, extroflexed rim with a rounded cross-section. The neck is cylindrical with a hyperbolic curve, transitioning cleanly to the shoulder without sharp attachment steps (unlike its predecessor, the variant IIA).
• Handles: Two thick, straight-running handles featuring a sharp, pronounced curve at the top where they attach just below the rim.
• Base: Instead of a long pointed spike common to older Roman styles, it tapers downward into a distinctive, small button-like protrusion or knob.
• Dimensions: Typically stands around 85 cm to 130 cm in height with a max diameter of roughly 37 cm, holding a capacity of 25 to 30 liters.

Additional Information

The object is made of quad polygons only with unwrapped and non-overlapping UV.
Two different sets of textures are included (color, ambient occlusion, roughness, specular, normal and bump) to get the same amphora with two different materials.
