Historical Background

HMS Prince of Wales (Pennant Number 53) was a premier King George V-class battleship of the British Royal Navy that played a brief but profoundly historic role in World War II. Despite an active service life of less than a year after being commissioned in January 1941, she participated in two of the most significant naval milestones of the war before her tragic sinking on December 10, 1941, an event that fundamentally ended the era of battleship supremacy in modern warfare.

Key Historical Moments
• The Battle of the Denmark Strait (May 1941): Barely out of her trials and carrying civilian shipyard workers to fix ongoing mechanical defects, she sailed alongside the battlecruiser HMS Hood to intercept the German behemoth Bismarck. After HMS Hood was catastrophically blown apart, Prince of Wales fought on alone, landing three critical 14-inch shell hits on Bismarck. These hits ruptured the German ship's fuel tanks, forcing her to abandon her Atlantic raiding mission and head toward France, which directly allowed the Royal Navy to hunt down and sink her days later.
• The Atlantic Charter (August 1941): She served as a floating diplomatic stage, transporting Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic to Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. There, he met with U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt to draft and sign the Atlantic Charter, laying down the Allied geopolitical foundation for the post-war world.
• The Sinking off Malaya (December 10, 1941): Sent to Singapore as the flagship of the ill-fated Force Z alongside the battlecruiser HMS Repulse, she was tasked with deterring Japanese expansion. Operating entirely without air cover, the ships were ambushed in the South China Sea by land-based Imperial Japanese Navy torpedo bombers and level bombers. Hit by multiple torpedoes—including a fatal strike that severed her outer port propeller shaft and caused massive uncontained flooding—she rolled over and sank, claiming 327 lives.

The Legacy and Her Successor
The loss of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse—occurring just three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor—shook the naval world. It proved definitively that even the most modern, heavily armored battleships could not survive moving at sea against coordinated air power without adequate fighter protection.
Today, her wreck lies upside down under 68 meters of water off the coast of Malaysia and is protected as an official war grave. The iconic name lives on in the modern fleet via the Royal Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the Queen Elizabeth-class HMS Prince of Wales (R09), which was commissioned on the exact anniversary of the battleship's sinking.

Additional Information

The model was created based on blueprints, photos and historical documentation. It was created with precision in detail and in real units of measurement to be a faithful digital reproduction of the original. It was modeled with Lightwave. The model includes all the cannons, all the anti aircraft guns, all the motorboats, lifeboats and the Supermarine Walrus floatplane on board. The objects are separated into 146 clearly named layers, to help you to import them into your 3d software.
N.B. GEOMETRY ONLY. This model has no materials and no textures (surfaces are clearly named to let you assign your materials and textures).
