Description

The Schnellboot S-100 class was the definitive and most famous German fast attack craft (E-boat) operated by the Kriegsmarine during World War II. Renowned for its exceptional speed, seaworthiness, and heavily armed profile, it was widely considered by military historians to be superior to contemporary Allied counterparts like the American PT boats.

Historical Background

Key Specifications & Design
• The "Kalotte" Armored Bridge: The most defining visual upgrade of the S-100 class was the addition of a heavy, rounded, armored bridge (known as the Kalotte) to protect the bridge crew from low-flying Allied strafing attacks.
• Hull Construction: Unlike flat-bottomed Allied motor torpedo boats, the S-100 utilized a round-bottomed hull made of wood frames on aluminum alloy ribs. This round hull made it extraordinarily stable and effective in the rough, choppy waters of the English Channel and the North Sea.
• Propulsion: It was powered by three massive Daimler-Benz MB 501 diesel engines, pushing out around 2,000 hp each. This setup propelled the 115-foot vessel to top speeds exceeding 43 knots (approx. 80 km/h).
• Lürssen Effect: The craft utilized a unique rudder arrangement (two small secondary rudders flanking the main rudder) that could be angled to create an air pocket behind the center propeller. This lifted the stern, lowered the bow wave, and drastically increased performance at high speeds.

Armament
The S-100 was exceptionally lethal, loaded with fire-power designed to ambush merchant convoys and hold its own against escort destroyers:
• Torpedoes: Two fixed bow 53.3 cm (21-inch) torpedo tubes. It carried two loaded torpedoes and usually a pair of reloads on deck rails behind the tubes.
• Flak Artillery: Typically armed with a 20 mm Flak gun in a forward tub, a twin 20 mm Flak mount amidships, and a powerful 3.7 mm Flak or 40 mm Bofors cannon mounted at the stern to fend off aircraft and enemy gunboats.
