Historical Background

HMS Rodney (29) was one of the most famous and unconventional British battleships of World War II. As one of two Nelson-class battleships built for the Royal Navy under the strict limitations of the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty, her unique silhouette and heavy fire power made her an icon of mid-20th-century naval dominance.

Unique Design & Specifications
To maximize armor protection while keeping within the treaty's 35,000-ton displacement limit, the Royal Navy grouped all of her main armament forward of the superstructure.
• Main Armament: Nine 16-inch (406 mm) Mark I guns housed in three triple turrets ("A", "B", and "X"), making her main battery the most powerful in the Atlantic.
• Layout: Placing all turrets forward shortened the length of the armored hull "citadel" needed to protect the ship's vitals, though it meant she could not fire directly astern.
• Dimensions: She had a length of 710 feet and was built by Cammell Laird.

Key World War II Operations
• Sinking of the Bismarck (1941): HMS Rodney’s most legendary achievement occurred on May 27, 1941. Alongside the battleship HMS King George V, she cornered the crippled German battleship Bismarck. Firing her 16-inch guns at point-blank range, Rodney heavily pounded the German flagship and effectively neutralized its ability to return fire.
• The Torpedo Myth: During the final engagement with Bismarck, Rodney claimed a torpedo hit, making her historically recognized as the only battleship to have successfully torpedoed another battleship in combat.
• Force H & Convoys: She extensively protected vital Allied supply routes during the Malta Convoys and participated in Operation Torch (the Allied landings in North Africa).
• D-Day & Invasion Support (1944): Rodney served as a critical coastal bombardment platform during the Normandy landings, shattering German fortifications and troop concentrations inland with her massive shells.
Due to heavy, continuous use throughout the war and structural strain from firing her massive guns, she was badly worn out by 1945. HMS Rodney was placed in reserve at the end of the war and was sold for scrap in 1948.

Additional Information

The model was created based on blueprints, photos and historical documentation. It was created with precision in detail and in real units of measurement to be a faithful digital reproduction of the original. It was modeled with Lightwave. The model includes all the cannons, all the anti aircraft guns, all the motorboats, lifeboats and the Supermarine Walrus floatplane on board. The objects are separated into 168 clearly named layers, to help you to import them into your 3d software.
N.B. GEOMETRY ONLY. This model has no materials and no textures (surfaces are clearly named to let you assign your materials and textures).
