Description

The 5-inch/25-caliber Mark 10 gun was the standard heavy anti-aircraft (AA) naval gun deployed by the United States Navy on its Washington Naval Treaty cruisers, pre-World War II battleships, and aircraft carriers during the 1920s and 1930s.

Historical Background

Designed in 1921 and entering service in 1926, its primary purpose was to deliver high-angle, rapid fire against incoming aircraft, featuring a lightweight design that allowed the gun crew to train and elevate it manually with high speed.

Technical Specifications
• Caliber: 5 inches (127 mm)
• Barrel Length: 125 inches (3.17 meters)
• Total Weight: ~2 metric tons (Barrel alone: ~2,100 lbs)
• Elevation Limits: -10° to +85°
• Muzzle Velocity: 2,100 to 2,155 feet per second (640 m/s)
• Maximum Firing Range: 14,500 yards (13,300 m) at 45° horizontal
• Maximum AA Ceiling: 27,400 feet (8,400 m) at 85° vertical
• Rate of Fire: 15 to 20 rounds per minute

Design and Ammunition
The gun utilized fixed or semi-fixed ammunition where a full round weighed approximately 73 to 80 lbs, featuring a 52-to-54.5-pound projectile. According to historical details documented on the International Ammunition Association Forum, specialized dummy or drill training rounds with unique locking mechanisms were also widely produced to train crews to handle the heavy ammunition smoothly. During its operational life, it fired standard High Explosive (HC), AA Common, and later, proximity-fuzed (VT) AA rounds.

Operational Evolution
While highly effective for its era, the Mark 10 and its variants (Marks 11, 13, and 17) were gradually superseded on frontline capital ships starting in the mid-1930s by the legendary dual-purpose 5-inch/38-caliber gun. The 5"/38 offered a compromise between the short-barreled 5"/25 (purely anti-air) and the long-barreled 5"/51 (purely anti-surface), giving ships a singular weapon capable of destroying both aircraft and surface fleets.
By late 1943, many 5"/25 guns removed from refitted or modernized battleships were refurbished with chrome-lined barrels to resist saltwater corrosion. They were repurposed into the Mark 40 "wet mount" deck gun configuration for U.S. Navy submarines. In this sub-surface role, the weapon proved highly effective for clearing smaller enemy surface vessels, as seen on surviving museum vessels like the Balao-class submarine USS Bowfin.
