Description

The QF 4.7-inch Mark VIII was a British heavy naval anti-aircraft gun designed in the 1920s. It holds a unique place in British naval history as the largest caliber weapon utilizing fixed ammunition (where the shell and propellant casing are handled as a single unit) ever to serve with the Royal Navy.

Historical Background

Service History & Vessel Deployment

Introduced into service in 1927 and used throughout World War II, a total of 84 units were built. Rather than being deployed on standard destroyers, which used different 4.7-inch models, the Mark VIII was carried in powered high-angle (HA XII) mountings on capital ships, aircraft carriers, and specialized support vessels:
• Nelson-class battleships (HMS Nelson and HMS Rodney)
• Courageous-class aircraft carriers (HMS Courageous and HMS Glorious)
• HMS Adventure (Cruiser-minelayer)
• HMAS Albatross (Australian seaplane tender)

Key Technical Specifications
Actual Bore Diameter: 4.724 inches (120 mm)
Barrel Length: 189 inches (45 calibers)
Total Weight (Gun & Breech): 6,636 lbs (3,010 kg)
Ammunition: Fixed QF; ~50 lb (23 kg) HE projectile; total round weight 74–76 lbs
Rate of Fire: 8 to 12 rounds per minute (maximum 15 rpm)
Muzzle Velocity: 2,457 ft/s (749 m/s)
Maximum Horizontal Range: 16,160 yards (14,780 m) at 45° elevation
Anti-Aircraft Ceiling: 32,000 feet (9,800 m) at 90° elevation
Breech Mechanism: Horizontal sliding block (semi-automatic)

Despite being an innovative heavy anti-aircraft weapon when designed, the weight of its 75-pound fixed rounds made continuous manual loading physically exhausting for gun crews during sustained engagements. Because the round had to be kept manageable for a human loader, it was physically shorter and carried less propellant than the separate-loading ammunition used by later weapons, such as the QF 4.5-inch gun.
