Description

The Howitzer 120-15 OTO 1933 (often written as 120 mm/15 OTO 1933) was a specialized Italian naval star-shell howitzer used by the Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy) during World War II. Primarily designed for illuminating night combat, this short-barreled artillery piece was deployed to fire star shells (flares) over high trajectories to expose enemy vessels.

Historical Background

Key Specifications & Performance

• Caliber: 120 mm (4.7 inches)
• Barrel Length: 15 calibres (hence the "120-15" or "120 mm/15" designation)
• Manufacturer: Odero-Terni-Orlando (OTO)
• Elevation: Up to 50°
• Muzzle Velocity: 400 meters per second (1,300 ft/s)
• Shell Weight: 19.8 kilograms (44 lbs)
• Effective Range: Approximately 4 to 6 kilometers (2.5 to 3.7 miles)

Operational Deployment & History
The OTO 1933 (and its subsequent 1934 variant) was embarked as auxiliary armament on several prominent Italian warships:
• Zara-class heavy cruisers
• Maestrale-class destroyers
• Oriani-class destroyers
• Soldati-class destroyers

Operational Limitations & Replacement
In practice, the weapon was largely considered a failure or highly inefficient. It suffered from an overly limited range, and the overall quality of the ammunition was subpar—the illuminating flares often lacked sufficient duration and intensity.
Because it took up valuable deck space while offering very little combat utility, the Regia Marina chose to phase it out on several ships. On multiple Soldati-class destroyers, the obsolete star-shell howitzer was completely removed and replaced by a fifth standard 120 mm/50 main gun in a single shielded mounting, significantly increasing the ships' anti-surface firepower.
