Historical Background

Design & Upgrades
The S-38b represents a mid-to-late war combat upgrade built on the highly successful S-38 technical base. The distinguishing features of the S-38b configuration include:
• The "Skull" Bridge (Kalottenbrücke): Starting from late 1941 into 1943, active S-38 boats were retrofitted with an armoured bridge house. This provided the steering crew with an extra 10–12 mm of armored protection made of specialized Wotan steel, shielding them from Allied strafing runs.
• Radar Detection: These upgraded vessels were often equipped with newly introduced radar detection devices (such as FuMB passive antennas) to help locate Allied shipping and defend against nighttime ambushes.
• Hull Construction: Built predominantly by the Lürssen Shipyard in Bremen, they combined a light-alloy keel with a double-planked mahogany wooden hull and a round bilge. This design allowed them to navigate heavy seas with excellent stability.

Technical Specifications
• Displacement: ~93–115 tons full load
• Length: 34.94 meters
• Propulsion: 3 × 12-cylinder Mercedes-Benz MB 501 diesel engines (generating up to 2,000 HP each)
• Maximum Speed: 38.5 to 39.5 knots (~72 to 76 km/h)
• Complement: 21 to 31 crew members

Armament
The standard weaponry configuration varied heavily over the course of the war depending on availability, but generally included:
• Torpedoes: 2 × 533 mm bow torpedo tubes (typically carrying 4 × G7a steam-powered torpedoes)
• Anti-Aircraft Guns: Varied setups including aft 2 cm FlaK C/38 automatic cannons, midships dual 7.92 mm MG34 machine guns, and frequently a captured 40 mm Bofors FlaK 28 gun on the stern, which was highly valued by crews for its stopping power.
• Mine Laying: Capable of carrying sea mines (such as the LMB series) and depth charges.
