Description

The Ise was the lead ship of her class of two dreadnought battleships built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the 1910s. She is most famous for her radical, mid-World War II transformation into a hybrid battleship-carrier (aviation battleship).

Historical Background

Service History & Modernizations
• Interwar Period: Completed in 1917, Ise missed major combat in World War I. She supported Japanese forces during the Siberian Intervention in the early 1920s and assisted survivors of the devastating 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. Her superstructure was extensively rebuilt into the iconic Japanese "pagoda mast" style during modernization phases in the late 1920s and 1930s.
• The Hybrid Conversion (1943): Following catastrophic aircraft carrier losses at the Battle of Midway in 1942, the IJN desperately sought quick ways to bolster its naval aviation. Ise and her sister ship, Hyūga, were selected for a unique quarter-conversion.
• The Remodeling: Workers removed her two aft 14-inch gun turrets (Turrets 5 and 6) and replaced them with a 70-meter-long flight deck and an enclosed hangar. This hybrid configuration allowed her to retain eight forward 14-inch guns while supporting an intended air group of 22 floatplanes or dive bombers, launched via catapults. Because the flight deck was too short, aircraft could not land back on the ship and had to return to land bases or be recovered from the water by crane.

Displacement: 31,260 long tons
Main Armament: 12 × 14-inch (356 mm) guns (6 twin turrets)
Aircraft Capacity: None
Top Speed: 23 knots

Characteristic Hybrid Battlecarrier (1943)
Displacement: ~35,800 long tons
Main Armament: 8 × 14-inch (356 mm) guns (4 twin turrets)
Aircraft Capacity: ~22 aircraft (catapult-launched)
Top Speed: ~25 knots

Final Operations and Sinking
Due to compounding shortages of fuel, qualified pilots, and operational aircraft, Ise never actually launched her planes in combat. During the pivotal Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, she and Hyūga served primarily as heavily armed anti-aircraft decoys to draw American forces away from the main striking fleet.
In early 1945, her catapults were removed to restore her gun arcs, and she was utilized as a transport ship to ferry critical strategic materials back to Japan. Marooned by extreme fuel shortages, Ise was relegated to a floating anti-aircraft platform. On July 28, 1945, she was heavily bombed and sunk in the shallow waters of Kure Naval Arsenal by American aircraft, just weeks before the end of World War II. Her remains were raised and scrapped after the war.
