Description

The Japanese battleship Yamato was the lead ship of her class and, alongside her sister ship Musashi, remains the largest and heaviest armored battleship ever constructed. Built in extreme secrecy by the Kure Naval Arsenal for the Imperial Japanese Navy, she was commissioned in December 1941, just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Historical Background

Operational Service & Fate

Designed to engage multiple enemy capital ships at once, the Yamato spent much of her career serving as the flagship of the Japanese Combined Fleet. Due to fuel shortages and Japan's shifting strategy toward naval aviation, her surface combat exposure was limited. Her major surface action occurred in October 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf (specifically the Battle off Samar), where she engaged American escort carriers and destroyers.
On April 7, 1945, during Operation Ten-Go, the Yamato was sent on a one-way kamikaze mission to defend Okinawa. Without air cover, she was swarmed by hundreds of U.S. Navy carrier-borne aircraft southwest of Kyushu. After taking massive bomb and torpedo hits, the ship capsized, causing a monumental magazine explosion. Of her 3,352 crew members, only 297 survived. Her wreckage was eventually discovered in 1985.

Technical Specifications:
• Displacement: ~65,000 long tons standard; 72,000–72,810 tonnes fully loaded.
• Dimensions: Length of 863 feet (263 meters) and a beam of 38.9 meters.
• Main Armament: Nine 46 cm (18.1-inch) Type 94 guns mounted in three triple turrets. These were the largest guns ever fitted to a warship, capable of firing 3,200-pound shells over 22 miles.
• Armor: Over 22,800 tons of armor (roughly 30% of her total displacement), featuring a 410 mm waterline belt and up to 650 mm on the turret faces.
• Propulsion: Turbine engines producing 150,000 shaft horsepower, reaching a top speed of 27 knots.

Additional Information

The model was created based on blueprints, photos and historical documentation. It was created with precision in detail and in real units of measurement to be a faithful digital reproduction of the original. Modeling, texturing and setup are all made with Lightwave 2015. Scene and model are compatible starting from Lightwave 11.x.

LIGHTWAVE FORMAT AVAILABLE ONLY

Inside the Lightwave scene there is a basic setup with controls that allows you to animate each element of the ship.
You can animate:
1) the rotation, the elevation and the recoil of each gun and armored turret;
2) the rotation of each gun and light tower control;
3) the rotation of each rangefinder;
4) the rotation of each search light;
5) the rotation of propellers and rudders.
Only flags and grids have UV maps. Other materials have planar or cubic texture maps.
Some basic textures are included. No UV texturing (except flags and grids)
