Historical Background

The 2 cm Flak 38 (Flugzeugabwehrkanone 38) was a 20 mm automatic anti-aircraft gun used by almost all branches of the German military during World War II. Developed by Mauser as an improved successor to the older Flak 30, it fixed early reliability issues and significantly boosted the rate of fire. It became the primary light anti-aircraft weapon of Nazi Germany and holds the distinction of being the most numerously produced German artillery piece of the entire war.

Key Specifications
While it was highly effective, its combat use in 1940–1941 revealed that single-barrel variants sometimes lacked enough immediate firepower to bring down fast-moving low-altitude aircraft. This led to the development of the famous Flakvierling 38, which clustered four Flak 38 barrels onto a single platform to quadruple the volume of fire.

Caliber: 20 mm (using 20×138mm B ammunition)
Weight (In Battery): ~405–412 kg (893–908 lbs)
Barrel Length: 1.3 meters (L/65)
Muzzle Velocity: 900 m/s (2,953 ft/s)
Theoretical Rate of Fire: 420–480 rounds per minute (per barrel)
Practical Rate of Fire: ~120–180 rounds per minute (including magazine changes)
Maximum Vertical Range: 3,700 meters (Effective ceiling ~2,200 meters)
Feed System: 20-round box magazines

Combat Roles & Mobile Platforms
• Anti-Aircraft Defence: Light flak units were heavily deployed to protect vital logistics like command headquarters, field artillery, troop columns, and supply depots.
• Ground Support: Though designed for the air, it was frequently used against ground targets in emergencies or ambushes. Its high-velocity rounds were devastating against enemy infantry, fortifications, and soft-skinned transport vehicles up to ranges of 800 meters.
• Mobile Adaptations: The Flak 38 was mounted onto a massive variety of chassis to give mobile units anti-air protection. It was commonly fitted onto half-tracks like the Sd.Kfz. 10/4 and fully tracked light tanks, giving rise to vehicles such as the Flakpanzer 38(t), Möbelwagen, and the quadruple-barreled Wirbelwind.
