Historical Background

The Bofors 40 mm gun is one of the most iconic and successful anti-aircraft autocannons in military history. Originally designed in the 1930s by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors, it became a legendary weapon widely utilized by both Allied and Axis forces during World War II. Its reputation for reliability, rapid fire, and lethal accuracy was so immense that the name "Bofors" became universally synonymous with anti-aircraft guns.

Universal Combat Adaptability
• Land-Based Air Defense: Operated on towed carriages, static fort emplacements, and integrated onto modern Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) like the Swedish CV9040.
• Naval Warfare: Mounted in single, twin, and quad configurations. It serves as a primary Close-In Weapon System (CIWS), such as Italy's radar-directed Breda DARDO system.
• Air-to-Ground Combat: Famously used by the United States Air Force as a heavy hard-hitting strike weapon onboard the AC-130 gunship fleet until its recent phase-out.
