Description

The Yamato and Musashi were the two largest, heaviest, and most powerfully armed battleships in naval history. Built in strict secrecy by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the late 1930s, these Yamato-class super-battleships were designed to outmatch multiple enemy vessels at once, embodying Japan's Kantai Kessen ("Decisive Battle") doctrine. However, their careers ultimately demonstrated the decline of the battleship era in the face of rising naval air power

Historical Background

The sister ships were near-identical marvels of engineering, prioritizing ultimate quality over quantity to counteract the industrial superiority of the United States:
Displacement: Approximately 72,000 long tons fully loaded.
Dimensions: 263 meters (862 feet) long with a beam width of 38.9 meters.
Main Armament: Nine 460 mm (18.1-inch) guns mounted in three triple turrets. These remain the largest guns ever installed on a warship, capable of firing 1.5-ton shells up to 40 kilometers.
Armor: Massive protection featuring a 410 mm side armor belt and 650 mm turret face armor.
Speed: Powered by 150,000 shaft horsepower turbines achieving a top speed of 27.46 knots.

Though built to destroy American fleets in classical gun duels, neither ship ever engaged an enemy battleship in the type of combat they were engineered for. Instead, both were overwhelmed and sunk by hundreds of carrier-based aircraft from U.S. Task Force 58. Their fates conclusively proved that the aircraft carrier had replaced the battleship as the new ruler of the ocean. A third planned hull of the class, the Shinano, was converted into an aircraft carrier mid-construction but was torpedoed and sunk by a U.S. submarine in November 1944 before ever seeing combat.

Additional Information

Color schemes included: YAMATO year 1945, MUSASHI year 1944
The model was created based on blueprints, photos and historical documentation. It was created with precision in detail and in real units of measurement to be a faithful digital reproduction of the original. Modeling, texturing and setup are all made with Lightwave 2015. Scene and model are compatible starting from Lightwave 11.x.

LIGHTWAVE FORMAT AVAILABLE ONLY

Inside the Lightwave scene there is a basic setup with controls that allows you to animate each element of the ship.
You can animate:
1) the rotation, the elevation and the recoil of each gun and armored turret;
2) the rotation of each gun and light tower control;
3) the rotation of each rangefinder;
4) the rotation of each search light;
5) the rotation of propellers and rudders.

Only flags and grids have UV maps. Other materials have planar or cubic texture maps.
Some basic textures are included. No UV texturing (except flags and grids)
